The Browns have agreed to terms on a contract with free agent inside linebacker Demario Davis, a league source confirmed to The Chronicle-Telegram on Wednesday morning.
Davis, who spent his first four years in the league with the Jets, visited the Browns on Tuesday. The contract is reportedly for two years and $8 million with $4.2 million guaranteed.
The deal indicates Davis will step into a starting role. He started every game the last three seasons with the Jets.
The Browns are looking to improve their run defense, which ranked last in 2014 (141.6 yards per game) and 30th last season (128.4). They signed Texans backup inside linebacker Justin Tuggle last week.
Craig Robertson, a starter for the Browns the last three years, is a free agent and isn’t expected to return. Karlos Dansby is 34 and his future with the team is uncertain.
Christian Kirksey, who’s entering his third year after being a third-round pick, is expected to assume a full-time starting role.
Davis, 27, has played all 64 games in his four-year career, including 48 starts the last three seasons. He was a third-round pick out of Arkansas State (No. 77 overall) in 2012 and has 349 tackles, an interception, eight passes defensed and 6.5 sacks.
The Jets decided not to re-sign Davis (6-foot-2, 239 pounds) and allowed him to become a free agent. He lost playing time toward the end of the year and struggled in pass coverage.
